Peaches are available mid May until mid-August.

 

Top2. When is pecan season?

Pecan season begins in mid October and extends thru January.

 

Top 3. When is strawberry season?

Strawberry season begins in late March and lasts approximately two months.

 

Top 4. What are the different varieties of peaches?

There are more than 40 commercial varieties of peaches grown in the state over a 12-week period. Lane Southern Orchards grows about 30 of these varieties. They are listed below in ripening sequence.

Top 5. What are the different varieties of pecans?

The 10 varieties of Georgia pecans we grow are Elliot, Moneymaker, Stuart, Desirable, Cape Fear, Schley, Sumner, Kernoodle, Seedling, and Mahan.

 

Top 6. Do you offer tours?

Yes, we offer three types of tours:

  1. Strawberry Field Trip for young students in April or May - package price of $5 includes 1-lb. strawberries, cup of ice cream, and strawberry coloring book.
  2. Farm Tour - New this year! Guided tour through our peach and pecan orchards. App. 45 minutes $5 per person. Group reservations taken in advance.
  3. Free self-guided tour of the peach packing line. Available when line is running during summer months. Educational signs explain each step of the process.

 

Top 7. Where is Lane Southern Orchards located?

Lane Southern Orchards is located just 5 miles off I-75. Take exit 142 at GA 96, go west, and follow the signs. Exit 142 is approximately 25 miles south of Macon or 5 miles north of Perry.

 

Top 8. How many acres of peach trees do you have?

We grow approximately 2,500 acres of peach trees and 2,000 acres of pecan trees.

 

Top 9. Where did peaches originate?

Peaches are native to the Orient. The ancient Chinese first cultivated peaches as early as 1000 BC where they were considered to be a symbol of longevity.

 

Top 10. Are peaches a healthy fruit?

A fresh Georgia peach is sweet, juicy, and delicious all by itself. Peaches are one of the lowest-calorie fruits, with virtually no fat, sodium, or cholesterol. Georgia peaches have the perfect combination of flavor and nutrition and can be enjoyed in a wide range of desserts, entrees, appetizers, and salads. (Nutrient analysis)

 

Top 11. How long has Southern Orchards been in business?

Lane Southern Orchards was founded in 1908.  It is a 4th generation peach packing facility.

 

Top 12. When is a good time to visit Lane Southern Orchards?

Lane Packing Company is open year-round. Peaches are offered throughout the summer months along with free, self-guided tours. Pecans begin in October and continue through February. Strawberries are available in March along with tours of the strawberry patch. School groups, church groups, and families are all encouraged to visit Lane Packing Company!

Top 14. What is the best way to store peaches? Pecans?

Fresh peaches are quite perishable and have a relatively short shelf life. They should be refrigerated immediately upon arrival. Pecans are perishable and require cool, dry storage. They keep well in a tightly sealed package in the refrigerator. For extended storage, place in the freezer where they should remain fresh for over one year.

Top 16. Are you open year-round?

Lane Southern Orchards is open year-round, seven days a week. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Years Eve Day.

 

Top 17. Who do I contact for wholesale information?

Lane Southern Orchards grows approximately 300,000 peach trees. Over 30 varieties are harvested mid May through mid August. Brands include Diamond D, Duke's Pride, Southern Orchard, and Mountain Top. Top 18. What is the difference between a freestone peach and a clingstone peach?

Lane Southern Orchards grows 30 different varieties of Georgia Peaches including Clingstone, Semi-Freestone, and Freestone. In a Clingstone peach, the fruit "Clings" to the stone. In a Semi-Freestone peach, the fruit pulls away from the stone when the peach is completely ripened. In a Freestone peach, the fruit of the peach pulls away from the stone. The Freestone varieties are the most popular for canning and freezing.

 

Top 19. Do you grow Elberta peaches?

Yes! We grow many new and improved varieties of peaches. The Faye Elberta peach will ripen in late July.

 

Top 20. How can I get on your mailing list?

Please fill out the necessary information so we can include you on our mailing list. (Sign-in with address, etc.)

 

Top 21. How do you ship your products?

We ship our products via UPS. Next day and second day air service are available on request. Sorry, we cannot ship to P.O. or APO Boxes.

 

Top 22. Do you accept all major credit cards?

All major credit cards are welcome as well as travelers' checks, and money orders. We do not accept personal checks.

 

Top 23. What are the tall trees planted throughout the peach orchards?

The life span of a peach orchard is 15 to 20 years. Pecan trees may be planted throughout the peach orchard so that when the peach trees are non-productive, there is a pecan-producing orchard.
